The importance of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source
Up to now, the conversion of our traditional energy system has mainly focused on the generation of renewable electricity. Despite good progress, green electricity only accounts for around twelve percent of the total energy requirement. The question is how the classic fossil fuels can be replaced in the non-electrified areas.
This umlaut study shows: Hydrogen is an elementary component of the ‘Energiewende’ and, in a cost-optimal mix of technologies, makes a major contribution to ensuring security of supply in the energy system. In order to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, the consumption of green hydrogen must increase by ten million tons. Hydrogen is used in all sectors, but especially in the areas of heat and industry. However, Germany will not be able to meet the emerging demand for green hydrogen entirely through its own supply. A significant proportion of the total energy requirement must continue to be purchased on the international market.
Hydrogen will become the central energy source for the global exchange of sustainable energy and thus replace fossil fuels in the long term. This study shows in which countries hydrogen can be produced efficiently and imported to Germany. Classic energy export countries must adapt their business model, while countries with great potential for renewable energies have the chance to enter the global energy trade.
For Germany, the upturn in a global hydrogen market offers enormous sales opportunities for technologies in plant construction. German companies in the energy industry and clean technology are consistently positive and open to the transformation of the energy system through the integration of hydrogen.
