In the city of Los Angeles, MoceanLab, a newly formed subsidiary of Hyundai, launched a pilot project for carshare services with the goal of expanding Hyundai’s business model to include mobility services. Needing support from an end-to-end partner to develop the strategy for the mobility pilot concept as well as bring the concept to reality, MoceanLab chose to work with the umlaut team to support their first mobility service launch.
MoceanLab is preparing a series of mobility services pilot programs which could include customer-focused solutions for last-mile mobility, multi-modal transportation, dynamic shuttling, and air taxi. As part of those programs, the venture has piloted a station-based carshare service near four train stations in the city, including Union Station, the biggest train station in Los Angeles, in collaboration with local government and LA Metro.
By leveraging our industry and technology experience, the umlaut team took ownership of the program to launch MoceanLab and its first mobility service in 2019.
We were able to support the project end-to-end, including: strategic planning; market research on service area selection and target customers; vendor selection and management; operational model selection; process definition; organizational setup; technology implementation support; government relationship building; and overall program management. To further help the client be one step ahead of their competition, umlaut provided insights into applying industry best practices.
Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is a relatively new concept with market-leading OEMs. With the knowledge accrued over the years in the shared mobility space, the umlaut team not only delivered end-to-end solutions to MoceanLab team, but also leveraged its crowdsourced data in the L.A. area, combining with government datasets to identify service areas and optimal vehicle placement. Ultimately, Mocean Carshare provides a convenient mobility solution, and aspires to alleviate the traffic congestion problems in the Downtown L.A. area.
Besides the Mocean Carshare program, umlaut also worked on several other mobility projects with both auto makers and government entities. We helped a Chinese OEM develop their first mobility service in the US and supported them from ideation to program launch. We worked with MDOT to launch a ride share service in the Upper Peninsula to serve the elderly, disabled, and veteran citizens. Just recently, we also helped an automaker launch their first robotaxi pilot in the city of Irvine.
